Mattias Ekström loses race victory after controversial water bottle incident

The Audi driver was demoted from first place after failing to comply with Parc Fermé rules. Why? When Mattias ran into the barrier to express his happiness, the Swede illegitimately had water poured into his race suit by a member of the press stand.

As a result of this, Mattias Ekström was unable to comply with the rules which lead to his exclusion from the race and the Canadian Mercedes driver Robert Wickens was given first place. Christian Vietoris and Daniel Juncadella were promoted to second and third place, which means all the drivers on the podium were Mercedes drivers.

Take into account it wasn’t Mattias Ekström’s fault he couldn’t comply with the rules and he had provisionally won the race on his 35th birthday, it would be normal for anyone to feel sorry for the poor lad. On other other hand, was this a sneaky cover up for a driver to race underweight? You decide.

What ever the case may be, Audi Sport hasn’t taken this lightly as they have planned to appeal for this case. To add insult to injury for Mattias Ekström, he was given a 1,000 Euro fine for failing to attach the steering wheel correctly after exiting his car in Parc Fermé.

18 year old with a considerable interest in cars. No, you won't hear me ranting on about which drivetrain is superior or which brand I'm totally devoted to, I am a motoring enthusiast who appreciated many aspects in the automotive industry. Apart from the Toyota Prius, Who honestly likes that car anyway?

I’m pretty sure the 500g he apparently ‘saved’ didn’t make the difference between winning and losing. But I guess rules are rules.
